Baby slings

Baby slings are pieces of cloth that support a baby or small child close to a parent or carer's body. They are usually suspended around the neck and over one shoulder. Prices for simpler slings up to designer slings can range from around $30 to over $200.

They are increasingly popular as an affordable, close and comfortable way of carrying a baby. As a result, fashionable brands and patterned baby slings have emerged and are available to style-conscious parents.

The origins of baby slings are wide with people from a great number of countries around the world having used slings historically to carry their children.

Many users of baby slings strongly believe that the close contact with their child can strengthen their bond with their baby and also reduce the number of times their child cries. This is sometimes referred to as 'attachment parenting'.

Different types of baby sling

Baby sling styles vary significantly. Some are made of simple sewn cloth while others have a lot more structure to them which can add to their weight. Shop around to find the style and budget which will suit you best.

Careful use of baby slings

  • Avoid carrying or drinking hot drinks while using a sling, for obvious reasons!
  • Along the same line, don't use a baby sling while cooking or handling sharp objects like knives
  • Don't bend over to pick something up; rather, bend at the knees to squat
  • Be wary of your baby grabbing at things, due to their newfound height; be especially careful in stores full of interesting items on high shelves
  • Don't use a baby sling while in a car and stick to proper carseats instead
  • Be careful around doorways, corners and shelves as you will not always be as aware of the baby attached to your body as you are to your own shape
